World cup matchday between Denmark and Australia

Denmark will face Australia at Al Janoub Stadium at 15:00 UTC in the Fifth match of Group D in the world cup.

This is an equally important match for both the teams.Whoever wins will advance to the Round of 16.As Tunisia’s chances of victory against France are less, this match will decide the 2nd place finishers in Group D.

If France win against Tunisia, Australia can go through the group stage with a draw.Denmark, on the other hand, must win to advance round of 16.

Thomas Delaney suffered a knee injury in the opener against Tunisia and will miss the rest of the tournament even if Denmark make it through.

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand may continue with the 3-4-3 arrangement with Andreas Skov Olsen likely to slot back into the XI in place of Jesper Lindstrom, and veteran Simon Kjaer in for Victor Nelsson.

Aussie defender Nathaniel Atkinson is doubtful after a knock to his ankle against France that kept him out of the Tunisia win, with Fran Karacic to continue in his place.

Manager Graham Arnold will want to avoid making any other changes, with Martin Boyle unfortunate to miss out after the forward suffered an ACL injury after the final squad was named.


TALKING POINTS

– This is the second meeting between Australia and Denmark at the FIFA World Cup, following a 1-1 draw in the group stage of the competition last time out in 2018.

– Australia have won just one of their four meetings with Denmark in all competitions (D1 L2), winning a friendly match 1-0 in June 2010.

– Australia have lost eight of their 11 World Cup games against European sides (W1 D2), failing to keep a clean sheet in all 11 matches. However, one of the three times they avoided defeat was against Denmark (1-1 in 2018).

– Denmark are winless in their last five World Cup games (D4 L1), since beating Peru on MD1 of the 2018 tournament. Following their defeat to France, they could lose back-to-back group stage matches at the tournament for the first time.

– Australia are looking to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup for only a second time in their six participations in the finals, having only previously done so in 2006
